Welcome to Area XII Valley. It is flanked to the West by the pounding surf of the Pacific Ocean and to the East by the calm blue waters of the San Franciso Bay. This area is divided into 3 major divisions beginning with San Francisco (Div. 36) at the North, San Mateo County (Div. 22) in the middle and Mid- Peninsula (54) or Northern Santa Clara County in the South. Within this region we have about 3000 members of the very active California Retired Teachers Association which is dedicated to protecting and enhancing our pensions benefits, health care for all , help services for seniors, followship among retired teachers and public education. To assist us in working on these goal, CRTA is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of 12 Directors elected by their respective areas and 4 elected statewide officers - President , President-elect , Secretary and Treasurer. I have the good fortune to be one of the Directors. In respect to political activity , we do not support candidates but do take active positions in respect to issues that effect us at boh the national and state level. We have a State Legislative Com- mittee assisted by an excellent Lobbyist who studies propositions and bills that effect us , makes suggestions to legislators on bills that might be placed in the legislative hopper, and make recommendations to the Board in respect to position and political action. The State Legislation Committee is supported by Divisions' Legislation Committees, a PAC fund , and most important 50,000 members State wide. |
Tom Collette Area XII Director The political struture of CRtTA , founded in 1929 , has been very successful over the years. In the last 2 decades it has succeeded with legislative bills that have increase purchasing power pro- tection of pension benefits from 70% to 75% to 80%. In Sept. 08 , CRTA worked with the Governor and the Legislature to increase benefit to 85%. In addition to Legislation , we have a similar ladder of State and Division Committees such as Insurance , Communicatons , and Membership. Locally , Area 12 is involved in a variety of community service and volunteer projects. In fact, we donated over $200,000 in volunteer hours of community service each year. We are helping new teachers learn the ropes of effectively managing their classrooms through our participation in the Educator Support Network, a partnership with NRTA, National Retired Teachers Association. Each division provides opportunities to socialize with your retiree friends at general meeting luncheons with are held usually every 2 months beginning in early fall and ending in May or June. The date, place , menu , and program for the next one appears in the newsletter that is sent to each member and which is also displayed on each division web site. |
